History

The story of the Alpine and Western Pacific Railroad began in 1990, when construction first started on what would become one of Northern Nevada’s most impressive garden railroads. Originally built as a backyard passion project, the layout grew rapidly in both scale and detail.

By 2000, the railroad was relocated to its current home in Reno, Nevada, where the tracks were expanded to span several thousand feet. Over the years, more tunnels, bridges, and water features were added, transforming the railroad into a true miniature world. The track itself is built from nickel-plated brass, resting on continuous concrete landscape curbing—a combination that ensures durability and smooth operation through the seasons.

Each division—Alpine, Western Pacific, and Tahoe Junction—reflects a unique landscape and story, while the hand-crafted buildings draw inspiration from real locations around the globe. Together, the tracks not only connect these divisions but also weave history, craftsmanship, and community into every loop and bend.
